On Monday, House Republicans released a harsh report alleging that President Biden’s actions could warrant impeachment, casting a shadow over his upcoming speech at the Democratic National Convention’s opening night.
The investigation, initiated last September, followed revelations that Biden, 81, frequently engaged with foreign business associates of his relatives during his vice presidency. This came after IRS investigators accused the Justice Department of a substantial cover-up.
The 291-page report from three House committees claims that Biden’s behavior amounts to “abuse of power” and “obstruction of justice or obstruction of Congress,” citing his alleged involvement in and concealment of a $27 million “influence-peddling racket.” It suggests that such actions are serious enough to lead to his removal from office.
According to the report, Biden and his family have profited from a global influence-peddling scheme, an issue that the rare congressional impeachment inquiry, initiated in September 2023 and approved by a party-line vote in December, sought to address. The inquiry involved extensive documentation, including 30 witness interviews, 30 subpoenas, and millions of pages of evidence.
The report criticizes Biden for allegedly aiding his son Hunter and brother James in dubious business activities and then obstructing Congressional oversight. It claims that Biden’s involvement in these schemes and his attempts to cover up the misconduct demonstrates a serious abuse of power.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, it is unlikely that the House will impeach Biden, given the slim Republican majority and his recent withdrawal from the presidential race. However, a censure or lesser reprimand might still be possible.
The report also highlights Biden’s alleged involvement in various foreign dealings, including connections with China and Ukraine. It details numerous instances where Biden’s actions seemingly facilitated his family’s financial gains, casting a long shadow over his presidency.
