On the third night of the Democratic National Convention, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota is poised to make a debut before the nation. Before Walz’s keynote speech, prominent Democrats including former President Bill Clinton, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and others will deliver remarks. The evening’s focus is on Vice President Harris’s advocacy for “our freedoms,” highlighting both her record and Walz’s credentials.
Walz is set to formally accept the vice presidential nomination, marking what the Harris campaign has dubbed “Walz Wednesday.” Known for his approachable demeanor and sharp political edge, Walz is expected to leverage his Midwestern appeal while addressing past criticisms from former President Trump and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) regarding his military service and personal challenges.
The speech aims to solidify Walz’s national presence, just two weeks after being announced as Harris’s running mate, according to campaign communications director Michael Tyler. Tyler emphasized that Walz’s address will underscore his commitment to fighting for the vulnerable.
Former President Clinton will return to the United Center, where he previously accepted the 1996 presidential nomination, to advocate for Harris as the party’s future. His speech is anticipated to critique Trump and appeal to key swing state voters, following an impactful address by former President Obama.
Nancy Pelosi will also take the stage, focusing on her bid to regain control of the House and her contentious relationship with Trump. Her remarks will likely spotlight Harris and Walz while addressing her recent role in pressuring Biden to withdraw from the race.
The night will feature other Democratic luminaries such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Governors Josh Shapiro and Wes Moore, all aiming to make an impression on the convention’s largest platform.
