Former President Trump criticized Democrats for what he views as an excessive focus on him at their Chicago convention this week. In a conversation with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Trump described the Democrats as “out of control” for their preoccupation with him.
He remarked that it is “pretty sad” that he was a major topic of discussion during the convention, where speakers, including former President Obama, targeted him in their speeches.

Trump’s comments came in response to Hewitt’s question about whether the negative rhetoric from Democrats could have influenced the assassination attempt against him in July. “Well, it could,” Trump said, expressing his discontent with the convention’s focus on him instead of more pressing issues.
He pointed out that while he was mentioned numerous times, topics like crime in Chicago, the economy, and the border were barely addressed. “The economy was mentioned about five times, the border maybe none, and crime almost none,” Trump continued. “They’re out of control, and they’re ruining our nation. Our nation is going to hell.”
Despite Trump’s critique, the convention has addressed the economy and border issues, though from the perspective of defending the Biden administration’s record and criticizing Trump. In his speech, Obama directly criticized Trump for his complaints about crowd sizes and his “whining.” Michelle Obama also indirectly criticized Trump, referencing his 2015 escalator ride as symbolic of the lack of genuine progress.
