For the first time since surviving an assassination attempt on July 13, former President Trump addressed supporters from behind bulletproof glass during an outdoor rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday. Trump, alongside his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), participated in the event as part of a broader campaign tour through key battleground states aimed at countering the Democratic convention.
The Trump campaign did not elaborate on the enhanced security measures in place, but the event featured a stage shielded by bulletproof glass and storage containers arranged to obstruct views from afar. At one point, Trump left the stage to assist an attendee who experienced a medical emergency.
While the rally was promoted as focusing on national security, Trump’s remarks strayed into various topics. He criticized job numbers revisions, lambasted President Biden and the Obamas for their convention speeches, and condemned the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, promising to demand the resignation of senior military officials involved in the operation.
Trump reiterated his claim that he could resolve conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East with a mere phone call, asserting his ability to restore global peace immediately after taking office again.
This event marked Trump’s first outdoor rally since the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was grazed by a bullet and experienced injuries. A bipartisan task force is investigating the security failures surrounding the incident, and Trump has indicated plans to return to Butler for another rally.
