Former President Trump is facing criticism for his disparaging remarks about Vice President Harris attending the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority’s boulé, an important event in the sorority’s calendar.
During a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump derisively referred to the boulé, where a sorority’s entire membership gathers, as merely a “party.” “She went actually, to a party,” Trump said. “And you know that she went to a sorority, sorority party and a very unimportant one. They have them numerous times during the year. It’s a shame.”
Harris, who is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), attended both AKA’s and Sigma Gamma Rho’s boulés in July. These sororities are part of the “Divine Nine,” a group of historically Black Greek-letter organizations.
In her speech at the Sigma Gamma Rho boulé, Harris emphasized a commitment to shaping the nation’s future. “In this moment, we face a choice between two very different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past. And we in this room are fighting for the future,” she said.
The boulés hold meaning for members, often featuring keynote addresses, workshops, and networking, aimed at reinforcing sisterhood and community.
Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright criticized Trump for his apparent lack of understanding of the historical and cultural importance of the Divine Nine. “This is not the first time we bear witness to Donald Trump’s racism,” Seawright remarked. “He clearly disregards the profound impact the Divine Nine has had on shaping the African American community and this country.”
The Divine Nine organizations were founded during a period of racial discrimination and violence, serving as bastions of excellence, service, and community support.
Prominent historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Coretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, and many others were members of these organizations. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, expressed disappointment in Trump’s remarks, emphasizing the leadership and service values instilled by her sorority.
Journalist Roland Martin, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, urged Divine Nine members to vote in response to Trump’s comments. Neither the Trump nor Harris campaigns immediately responded to requests for comment.
