Late Wednesday, former President Trump criticized Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) for what he termed a “terrible” speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Shapiro had delivered a fervent address, warning of the dangers a second Trump term would pose to American rights and freedoms. Trump responded via social media, denouncing Shapiro and Vice President Harris for their alleged lack of support for Israel despite the Gaza conflict.
On Truth Social, Trump labeled Shapiro as the “highly overrated Jewish Governor” and dismissed his speech as “really bad and poorly delivered.” Trump accused Harris of having a detrimental stance toward Israel, claiming she would complicate its survival. He also asserted that he was the strongest ally Israel had ever known, contrasting his record with Shapiro’s alleged inaction.
These remarks follow Republican accusations that Harris did not select Shapiro as her running mate due to his Jewish faith—a claim disputed by many Jewish Democrats. Shapiro responded to Trump’s attack, denouncing it as a continuation of Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
He emphasized that his DNC speech focused on unity and acceptance, in stark contrast to Trump’s approach. Shapiro also criticized Trump’s credibility on antisemitism and bigotry issues, asserting that Trump is more interested in sowing division than addressing these concerns.
White House spokesperson Herbie Ziskend condemned Trump’s comments as antisemitic and harmful, reaffirming Biden and Harris’s commitment to combating hate and bigotry.
