On Wednesday, CNN commentator Van Jones highlighted what he perceives as a profound sense of patriotism surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris as Democrats rally behind their new candidate. Speaking on CNN, Jones reflected on the palpable energy at the Democratic National Convention, noting the recurrent themes of freedom and democracy in the speeches delivered.
Jones distinguished between what he termed “cheaper patriotism” and a more profound sense of national pride. He emphasized that the convention’s portrayal of patriotism is more substantive, moving beyond mere slogans. “This is a deeper patriotism,” he remarked. “It’s not just about the superficial ‘rah, rah’ elements.”
He elaborated that the convention’s messages frame freedom not as the mere absence of constraints, like avoiding taxes or personal autonomy, but as the broader ability to live a fulfilling life—a vision that necessitates communal support and effective governance. “To fully live, we need each other and a capable government,” Jones asserted.
Jones commended Harris for embodying this robust patriotism and her readiness to advocate vigorously for her campaign. He described her as possessing a “muscular patriotism,” signifying both her strength in defending her values and her eagerness to engage in the political battle. “There’s a musculature to what she’s saying,” Jones noted. “She’s not afraid to fight for what she believes in.”
As the convention progresses, Harris is set to deliver a highly anticipated speech on Thursday night, formally accepting the Democratic nomination for the presidency. Her address will follow a week of prominent speeches from various Democratic figures, including President Biden, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and First Lady Michelle Obama. The convention has also included contributions from some Republicans.
