This week, Democrats sought to demonstrate that patriotism transcends Republican and MAGA affiliations. The Chicago convention was vibrant with chants of “USA, USA, USA!” and a display of red, white, and blue balloons, culminating in a sea of American flags during Vice President Harris’s speech.
Traditionally associated with former President Trump‘s rallies, the display of American flags and patriotic symbols was adopted by Democrats to challenge the notion that they have moved away from patriotic values. “It is now our turn to carry on the legacy of optimism and faith, fighting for the country and ideals we hold dear,” Harris declared, highlighting the party’s dedication to American principles.
The convention featured delegates in camouflage and American flag hats, with performances of patriotic songs and enthusiastic crowd responses. Classic tracks like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and John Mellencamp’s “Small Town” set the tone, reinforcing the Democrats’ patriotic message.
Harris’s remarks echoed President Biden’s themes of American potential but added her unique perspective as a new-generation leader and the daughter of immigrants. Jamal Simmons, a former communications director for Harris, explained that Democrats envision a more inclusive notion of American identity, contrasting with the Republican narrative that often excludes marginalized groups.
Former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) praised the Democrats’ effort to reclaim patriotism, noting that their previous focus on America’s flaws had alienated some voters. “The shift towards celebrating America is a strategic move that resonates well with the public, especially immigrant families,” he said.
In the hour before Harris’s speech, veterans, including Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), spoke on military support, further fueling the patriotic atmosphere. Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) endorsed Harris, underscoring that Democrats share a deep love for the country.
The emphasis on “freedom” in Harris’s campaign aligns with a broader Democratic effort to reclaim patriotic themes, echoing former President Obama’s 2008 message of “hope.” Harris’s running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.), also emphasized national pride in his keynote address, reinforcing the party’s commitment to American values.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg leveraged his military background to counter Sen. JD Vance’s comments about childless Americans, highlighting the physical and emotional sacrifices of service members.
While Harris addressed the threat posed by another Trump administration and criticized the January 6, 2021, riots, her speech aimed to promote patriotism as a fundamental Democratic value rather than focusing solely on political rivalry. She urged voters to help “write the next great chapter” in American history, invoking a sense of responsibility and pride.
In accepting the Democratic nomination, Harris underscored her commitment to the nation, stating, “On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination.”
