How Democrats Use ‘Freedom’ to Imply Mandates

Vice President Kamala Harris

During the Democratic National Convention, speakers sought to present Kamala Harris as a blend of Perry Mason, Jack McCoy, and Mother Teresa, but the convention’s central message—freedom—was more about marketing than genuine principle.

Democratic strategists have long recognized that “freedom” sells effectively, a shift highlighted by Wall Street Journal reporter Molly Ball in December. She noted that abortion rights advocates are now emphasizing “freedom” and “values” to resonate with voters, particularly in conservative areas.

Democrats use the “freedom” narrative to counteract Republican restrictions but face criticism for selective application of freedom in policies

The convention showcased this strategy, with speakers frequently championing “freedom to decide” over the older “pro-choice” label. According to Democratic insiders, this reframing was necessary to tap into deeper emotional responses rather than just surface-level opinions. The term “freedom” proved particularly appealing to independents and older voters.

Democratic pollster Angela Kuefler suggested that the party could leverage the “freedom” narrative across various issues, linking it to Republican attempts to restrict educational materials and gender-related treatments. Yet, the term “freedom” seems selective, as there are several areas where Democrats may restrict liberties.

For instance, while promoting freedom in healthcare decisions, Democrats have historically mandated health insurance coverage, as seen with ObamaCare and earlier Clinton proposals. Similarly, President Biden’s mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations for federal employees and large employers contradicts the notion of personal choice in health care.

The Green New Deal’s push for electric vehicles threatens the freedom to choose conventional cars, with environmental regulations compelling automakers to phase out gas-powered vehicles. Democrats’ stance against school vouchers and charter schools reflects a potential limitation on educational choices.

Under Democratic leadership, some freedoms, like attending religious services or competing in gender-specific sports, could be restricted. Tim Walz, a prominent Democratic figure, exemplified this with his pandemic-era restrictions and opposition to bills restricting transgender athletes.

While the convention’s freedom rhetoric appeals to American values, it masks a potential erosion of long-standing freedoms if Democrats gain control.
