In a recent interview, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson discussed her readiness for the possibility that this year’s presidential election might be decided by the Supreme Court. Jackson, speaking with CBS’s Norah O’Donnell, acknowledged the potential for legal disputes arising from the political process, underscoring that the Supreme Court must be prepared to address such issues if they arise.
This interview is part of a broader media effort leading up to the release of Jackson’s memoir, “Lovely One,” set to debut next week. A preview of the conversation will be featured on Tuesday’s “CBS Evening News,” with the full interview airing on “CBS News Sunday Morning” over the weekend.
When asked by O’Donnell if she is prepared for the election possibly reaching the Supreme Court, Jackson replied, “As prepared as anyone can be,” with a touch of humor, adding, “Let me ask you, are you prepared for all the news cycles that are revealing because of this election?” To which O’Donnell responded candidly, “Um, no.”
The timing of this interview coincides with current polling data indicating that Vice President Harris holds a narrow lead over former President Trump, with support figures showing 49.5 percent for Harris compared to 45.5 percent for Trump, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.
Jackson, appointed to the Supreme Court by President Biden in 2022, also addressed her recent dissent on the Court’s ruling regarding criminal immunity for former presidents. This ruling, which provided a legal advantage to Trump in his battle against indictments, was a point of contention for Jackson. She expressed concern about the appearance of unequal treatment within the criminal justice system, which traditionally holds all individuals to the same legal standards.
