House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) remains optimistic about the Democratic Party’s chances of securing a majority in the House of Representatives, despite the ongoing vote count across various states.
“We still have a viable path to reclaiming the majority,” Jeffries told Spectrum 1 News’ Errol Louis. He emphasized that crucial battleground states like Arizona and Oregon, along with five close races in California, remain undecided and are central to the party’s hopes. These races, Jeffries noted, are too close to call and could play a vital role in determining the outcome.
According to late Thursday projections from Decision Desk HQ, Republicans are leading with 216 seats, while Democrats have 204. However, key races in Washington’s 3rd District, Oregon’s 5th, Arizona’s 6th, and California’s 13th District have yet to be projected, leaving room for potential shifts in the balance of power.
Jeffries also acknowledged the strong Democratic performance in New York, crediting a well-coordinated campaign effort that was launched in the repercussion of the 2022 midterms. “It was an all hands on deck effort,” he remarked, celebrating the unity and strategy behind the victories.
With Republicans poised to gain control of the Senate and the executive branch next year, the Democrats are focused on winning back the House to maintain a check on Republican power.
