Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican representative from Illinois, voiced approval for the rumored nomination of Senator Marco Rubio as the next Secretary of State under President-elect Trump.
While acknowledging Rubio’s evolving political stance, Kinzinger noted, “Marco has certainly changed his views on several issues, like voting against Ukraine aid, which was surprising to me.” Despite this shift, he emphasized Rubio’s grasp of foreign policy, which he believes will be valuable in this new role.
Kinzinger, known for his criticism of Trump and for voting to impeach him, contrasted Rubio’s expertise with other potential nominees who lacked foreign policy experience. He stated, “Compared to some of the other names circulating, individuals with little to no foreign policy experience, Rubio stands out as a solid choice.”
The praise came just hours after reports surfaced that Trump was moving to appoint Rubio and other key allies to top Cabinet positions. Rubio has long been recognized for his hawkish stance on foreign policy, especially regarding issues with Iran and China.
Although Kinzinger expressed uncertainty about how Rubio would shape Trump’s foreign policy agenda, he indicated that Rubio’s flexibility to adapt to Trump’s demands could seriously influence his performance. “Marco has shown he can adjust his views to fit Trump’s needs,” Kinzinger observed. “The question is, what will Trump require from him?”
Addressing concerns about Russia, Kinzinger remarked that Trump’s stance—believing he could resolve the Russia issue quickly—was a point of contention. He hoped that any deal with Russia would safeguard Ukraine’s ability to defend itself in the future.
Additionally, Kinzinger speculated that the next administration would likely be less restrictive on Israel and take a more aggressive approach toward confronting Iran. Regarding Israel, Kinzinger added, “I believe the new administration will impose fewer constraints on Israel and likely adopt a more assertive stance toward Iran.”
As Trump builds his national security team, he has selected Rep. Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations and Rep. Mike Waltz as national security adviser. He is also considering South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem for the Secretary of Homeland Security role. Rubio’s potential departure from the Senate would reduce the Republicans’ majority, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expected to appoint his successor.
