On Wednesday, House Republicans finalized their leadership lineup for the upcoming 119th Congress, preparing to take full control of Washington as they move into their majority.
In a unanimous decision, GOP lawmakers chose Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to continue holding the gavel, with his candidacy set for a full House vote in January. A floor vote for Speaker will take place on January 3.
Following Johnson, Republicans reelected Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as majority leader, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) as majority whip, and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) to lead the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) was also elected House GOP conference chair in a 146-67 vote, taking over from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who is leaving the House to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Earlier this week, President-elect Trump nominated Stefanik, the highest-ranking Republican woman in Congress, for the ambassadorship, marking his first House pick for his administration. The timing of Stefanik’s resignation from the House remains uncertain.
The contest for conference chair proved to be the most competitive leadership race this cycle, with several contenders vying for the position. Rep. Blake Moore (R-Utah) was chosen. For chair of the House Republican Policy Committee, members elected Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.). Rep. Erin Houchin (R-Ind.) was selected as the new House Republican Conaference secretary.
