George Conway, a vocal Republican critic of President-elect Trump, described the recent Cabinet appointments as “truly as bad as you can imagine.” He specifically criticized the nominations of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Health and Human Services secretary, Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, and former Rep. Matt Gaetz for U.S. attorney general.
Conway told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Thursday that these selections were so problematic, saying, “If you were actively trying to do harm to the country, to destroy the country, these are the kinds of people, if not the people, you would pick.” Trump has faced criticism over some of his Cabinet choices this week.
The nomination of Kennedy, an anti-vaccine advocate and environmental lawyer, to head HHS has raised alarms among Democrats and public health experts. They fear that Kennedy could interfere with key agencies, exacerbate vaccine hesitancy, and steer agency funding toward his personal views.
Meanwhile, Gabbard, a former Hawaii congresswoman, may struggle to gain confirmation as intelligence director due to concerns about her perceived alignment with Russian viewpoints. Gaetz’s unexpected nomination for attorney general also faces resistance, with some Republicans already predicting that the Senate will not approve his appointment.
When asked about the possibility of Republican senators opposing Trump’s choices, Conway expressed uncertainty, saying, “I can’t say that with confidence. I wouldn’t bet that all three of them would go through, but I don’t think you can lose money betting on the spinelessness of Republican senators.”
Earlier in the week, Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a staunch Trump ally, warned his fellow Republicans that they could be targeted for removal from the Senate if they oppose Trump’s nominees or legislative agenda.
