President-elect Trump announced that he will nominate Linda McMahon as Secretary of the Education Department. McMahon, who co-led Trump’s transition team, had been considered for the Department of Commerce, but that role is now expected to go to her co-lead, Howard Lutnick.
McMahon’s background includes serving as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, a role that gave her experience in government leadership.
Trump praised McMahon’s dedication to expanding educational “Choice” across the country, saying she would work to empower parents in making decisions about their children’s education. This focus on expanding school options aligns with the administration’s broader education agenda.
However, McMahon will face significant challenges, as Trump has previously discussed plans to abolish the Department of Education altogether.
One of McMahon’s primary tasks will likely be to address the changing interpretation of Title IX, particularly after the Biden administration extended protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity. This revision has been controversial among Republicans, with numerous states challenging the change in court. McMahon’s stance on this issue will be closely scrutinized as she steps into the role.
McMahon’s nomination also comes amid personal controversy. She and her husband, Vince McMahon, co-founded World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Recently, they were named in a lawsuit accusing WWE leadership of allowing years of sexual abuse by a ringside announcer. This legal challenge could complicate her confirmation, adding an additional layer of scrutiny to her nomination.
