Musk Likely to Face Frustration with Bureaucratic Job and Spending Cuts, Says Khanna

Khanna predicts Musk may face challenges in advocating for reduced defense budgets in his new role

California Representative Ro Khanna expressed concerns that Elon Musk might quickly grow disillusioned with efforts to reduce government spending. Speaking on the “POLITICO Tech Podcast” Thursday, Khanna remarked, “Elon could find himself frustrated rather soon.

Let’s see if he can push for cuts in defense spending. My guess is many on that committee may actually push for increased defense budgets. It’ll be an interesting challenge.” Musk, alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, has been appointed to spearhead initiatives to streamline government operations and cut expenses as co-leaders of the new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE).

Khanna pointed out that while the idea isn’t new, past efforts to curb wasteful spending have often fallen short. He noted, “Many commissions have made recommendations to reduce inefficiencies, but they often remain just that—recommendations. The real challenge will be addressing actual waste and abuse, particularly with defense contractors.”

Plans outlined by the duo include relocating federal jobs despite sweeping layoffs and regulatory rollbacks. However, as DOGE operates as an advisory body outside the government, it may encounter many obstacles from both the executive branch and Congress, experts have previously explained.

Even so, Musk’s close relationship with president-elect Trump and his vocal support during the campaign suggest he has the administration’s ear and influence on policy discussions.
