Matt Gaetz, who recently resigned from Congress, appears to be plotting his next political chapter while staying in the public eye. Following intense criticism over his potential nomination as U.S. Attorney General under Donald Trump, Gaetz has turned to Cameo, offering $500 personalized messages.
Yet, his activities on social media suggest aspirations beyond this temporary gig, as he engages with followers and floats ideas for future roles.
One prominent possibility is a run for governor of Florida. Former Florida Representative Anthony Sabatini sparked speculation by tweeting that Gaetz could succeed Ron DeSantis, whose term ends in 2026. Gaetz amplified the idea by sharing Sabatini’s post along with an image of the Florida flag.
Sabatini’s support, however, raises eyebrows due to his connections to Joel Greenberg, a convicted sex trafficker whose association with Gaetz triggered federal and congressional investigations that have clouded his reputation.
Despite these controversies, Gaetz remains undeterred. Investigations into his ties to Greenberg, including a House Ethics Committee probe, likely ended his prospects for a Cabinet position but did not result in charges. These setbacks have not stopped him from exploring new roles in Florida’s increasingly Republican political arena, where leadership opportunities are set to emerge as DeSantis moves on.
Another role Gaetz has teased is serving as a special counsel in a future Trump Department of Justice. Referencing claims that such positions do not require Senate confirmation, Gaetz signaled his openness to pursuing a federal role under Trump’s leadership. Whether he targets the governor’s office or a position in Washington, Gaetz appears determined to remain a prominent figure in Republican circles.
