Ken Martin, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), sharply criticized his party for its defeat to Republicans this election cycle, calling the loss a “damning indictment” from the American public during a Friday night appearance on The Lead with Jake Tapper.
Martin pointed out, “For the first time, the majority of Americans now believe the Republican Party better represents the interests of the working class and the poor, while the Democratic Party is seen as aligning with the wealthy and the elite.”

He described this shift as a serious blow to the party’s reputation, urging that the Democrats must work to reconnect their platform with key issues such as abortion rights, healthcare, and minimum wage to better align with their base.
As the chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer Labor Party, Martin emphasized the importance of rebuilding the party’s structure, stressing the need to focus on “every race in every zip code,” rather than just prioritizing federal races.
Some within the party have blamed the loss on President Biden’s early departure in July, which left Vice President Harris only about 100 days to make her case to voters. Despite these challenges, exit polls indicated that Republicans gained support from working-class Americans by focusing on inflation, immigration, and border security issues.
With DNC Chair Jamie Harrison stepping down, the party will soon select new leadership for the upcoming election cycle. Martin is among four candidates vying for the role as the DNC looks to redefine its vision after President-elect Trump’s victory.
