Schmitt Urges Trump to Dismiss DOJ Officials Involved in His Investigations

Senator Schmitt calls for a shakeup at the DOJ ahead of Trump’s second term

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) voiced his opinion on Sunday, expressing that President-elect Trump should dismiss the Department of Justice (DOJ) personnel who were involved in investigating his legal matters.

In an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Schmitt discussed his perspective on the future of the DOJ, especially as Trump prepares for his second term. He raised concerns that the department might be weaponized to target Trump’s political adversaries.

Schmitt’s strong opinion highlights the ongoing tensions between Trump and the DOJ

Schmitt criticized the Biden administration for its legal challenges against Trump, claiming that the DOJ needs to be held accountable. He believes Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for attorney general, will be key in bringing the necessary changes.

When pressed by host Kristen Welker on what accountability would entail, particularly regarding special counsel Jack Smith and Attorney General Merrick Garland, Schmitt stated, “Accountability means that those responsible should be immediately fired.”

He continued, “Anyone involved in the effort to disqualify President Trump from the ballot or imprison him because of political motivations is wrong.” Schmitt noted that it remains to be seen how the DOJ will operate under Bondi, as she still requires Senate confirmation before taking office.

A year ago, Trump was facing multiple criminal trials with 91 charges that could result in decades of prison time. Now, after securing the presidency, those cases are essentially on hold, making him the first convicted felon to ascend to the nation’s highest office.
