A new subcommittee within the House Oversight and Accountability Committee will be chaired by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), focused on delivering greater efficiency in government operations.
The Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) Subcommittee will work alongside a White House commission under the same name, which will be led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
Sources have revealed that Greene has already engaged with the incoming team from the White House’s Department on Government Efficiency, including Ramaswamy, to discuss plans for the initiative.
Greene emphasizes tough approach to firing underperforming government workers
The purpose of the DOGE subcommittee is to align with the broader goals of the Oversight and Accountability Committee by addressing waste, fraud, and abuse within the federal government. Its key objectives will include investigating wasteful government spending, exploring ways to restructure federal agencies to boost efficiency, and identifying solutions to reduce bureaucratic red tape, all aimed at improving national prosperity.
In a social media post on Thursday, Greene shared her background in managing a construction business and expressed her intention to push for the removal of inefficient career government employees, who are often protected by workplace safeguards.
She criticized the inability to dismiss underperforming government workers, stating, “In the private sector, if you’re not doing a good job, you get fired. But for some reason, in government, bad employees—whether they’re failing to do the job they were hired to do or working in roles that are no longer needed—never get fired. This is incredibly unfair to the hard-working taxpayers of our country, and it’s about to change.”
Greene’s rise is seen, especially considering that in 2021, during her first term, she was stripped of all committee assignments by Democrats over past controversial social media activity. Her appointment marks a new phase in her congressional career, as it signals a reconciliation with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), whom Greene had previously criticized sharply.
The subcommittee will be formally established when the Oversight Committee convenes to finalize its rules for the 119th Congress. James Comer, the chair of the Oversight Committee, confirmed the creation of the subcommittee and Greene’s leadership role.
He emphasized that the subcommittee’s mission would be unapologetically focused on eliminating waste and inefficiency, saying, “We don’t care if someone’s feelings get hurt if we eliminate their fat cat bureaucratic job in Washington.” He also praised Greene for her tenacity, noting, “She’s not afraid to back down or walk away from a fight.”
