Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., expressed her relief that President-elect Trump’s inauguration will coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, even though she opposed his victory in the election. According to The Independent, she shared, “I’m glad that if it was going to happen, it happened on the King holiday, because Dr. King is still speaking to us.”
She views the inauguration as a crucial moment for the nation, seeing it as a reminder and an opportunity to challenge the new administration’s controversial policy proposals. The Independent noted that King sees the event as a “wake-up call” for the country.
King had hoped that the election would bring a leader who reflected the values her father championed, and she had been excited about the possibility of Vice President Kamala Harris making history on MLK Day. She had long hoped the country would elect a leader who truly embodied the principles her father stood for.
She also cautioned that Trump’s presidency could have dangerous consequences for the nation. “A Trump win could potentially set in motion a perilous and oppressive presidential administration that would undermine and deny the hard-fought battle for civil and human rights for which my parents and so many others sacrificed,” she warned, according to The Independent.
