Dana Carvey recently discussed his impersonation of Elon Musk, admitting on a podcast that he wasn’t satisfied with his portrayal of the billionaire. Speaking with David Spade on their Superfly podcast, Carvey remarked, “I can’t do Elon Musk very well.”
He went on to explain that while his impression didn’t quite capture Musk, he could still replicate a sound that was unique to the billionaire. “He has this incredible accent—South African roots, mixed with a bit of Canadian, and a touch of Pennsylvania. It’s like a mix of Australian and British, but not exactly any of those,” Carvey said.

Earlier this month, Carvey portrayed Musk on Saturday Night Live, a performance that attracted criticism from Musk himself. Following the episode, the billionaire took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his displeasure. “SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality,” Musk wrote on November 10, referencing a sketch where the cast humorously called out President-elect Trump after his election win.
Carvey, known for his iconic SNL work as an Emmy-winning cast member from 1986 to 1993, is set to return to the show in December. He has also gained recognition for his past impersonations of figures such as President Biden and former President George H.W. Bush.
