Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York called for Americans to remain composed as concerns over President-elect Trump’s Cabinet picks continue to rise. Speaking on CNN with Jim Sciutto, Suozzi urged a measured approach, saying, “Let’s look at what they’re proposing to do and their background, and let the Senate go through their process of vetting these candidates so that they can decide whether or not to give their advice and consent to these appointments. I want to tell everybody, you know, calm down.”
Trump’s Cabinet selections have drawn attention, with some picks sparking controversy. For example, former WWE CEO Linda McMahon’s nomination for Education secretary raised eyebrows, and allegations like those surrounding Pete Hegseth, Trump’s Defense secretary choice, have led to doubts about his confirmation.
Concerns have also emerged from Democrats regarding other appointments, such as Russell Vought, a Project 2025 co-author nominated to head the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Despite this, Suozzi encouraged those voicing worry to change focus.
“We have to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. If everybody’s going to explode and freak out over every single thing, then you’re never going to be able to focus on the things that really matter,” he explained, adding, “We’ve got to pick our battles.”
Suozzi also critiqued the questions Democrats have been asking in light of Republican victories, urging his colleagues to reconsider their approach. “We’ve got to calm down. We’ve got to stop worrying about how did these people vote for Donald Trump? That’s not the question. It’s why did they vote for Donald Trump?” he said.
