Businessman and Army veteran Daniel Driscoll has been selected by President-elect Trump to serve as his secretary of the Army. In a Wednesday announcement on Truth Social, Trump praised Driscoll’s diverse background, stating, “As a former Soldier, Investor, and Political Advisor, Dan brings a powerful combination of experiences to serve as a disruptor and change agent.”
Currently, Driscoll serves as a senior advisor to Trump’s vice presidential choice, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio). He dedicated three and a half years to the Army, including a deployment to Iraq in 2009. Following his military service, he attended Yale Law School, where he forged a connection with Vance.
In 2020, Driscoll campaigned for a congressional seat in North Carolina’s 11th district but lost in the primary to former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.). He has also worked as an investment banker in North Carolina.
Senate confirmation will be required for Driscoll’s appointment. With Republicans set to hold the majority in the Senate next year, he would be responsible for overseeing more than a million active-duty soldiers and managing the Army’s annual budget, the largest of any military branch.
Currently, Christine Wormuth holds the position of Army secretary, having made history as the first woman to occupy the role after her appointment by President Biden in April 2021. Trump further stated, “Dan will be a fearless and relentless fighter for America’s Soldiers and the America First agenda.”
