X Faces Accusations of Censoring Posts by Mace

Nancy Mace accuses X of censorship over her transgender rights video

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has alleged that her posts on the social media platform X are being censored following the attachment of a content warning to a video in which she addresses transgender rights activists.

On Thursday evening, she expressed her frustration on X, stating, “Now my posts are being censored by @X?! @elonmusk, did you see this? I’d like to have a word. Women standing up for themselves is not hateful conduct. It’s not hate speech.”

In her follow-up comments, she declared, “A man’s mental health issue isn’t my problem. Keep men’s balls out of women’s stalls. #HoldTheLine,” further emphasizing her stance by adding, “Free speech should be free.”

Mace calls out Elon Musk after content warning on her viral post

Along with her message, she shared a screenshot of the video, which was labeled with a tag stating, “Visibility limited: this Post may violate X’s rules against Hateful Conduct.” This label links to X’s Help Center, detailing the enforcement actions that may be taken against content suspected of violating platform rules.

The video, which Mace posted earlier that day, shows her speaking to the camera with a bullhorn outside a police station. In it, she ridicules a group of approximately 15 transgender rights activists who were arrested at the Capitol while protesting a bathroom ban implemented last month by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Johnson’s policy prohibits transgender women from using Capitol bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity. This ban was enacted shortly after Mace introduced a bill aiming to restrict trans women’s access to Capitol restrooms, which she initiated in response to the election of Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-Del.), marking her as the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress.

Mace is not alone in her assertions; many conservatives have voiced similar concerns about being censored on social media platforms. Since acquiring X (formerly Twitter) in 2022, Elon Musk has reversed various content moderation policies, citing a commitment to free speech.

He frequently promotes the platform as a bastion of free expression, though critics on the left have accused him of manipulating the algorithm to favor his content and that of right-leaning users. Following President-elect Trump’s recent victory, tens of thousands of users have abandoned the platform, citing a “toxic” or “disturbing” atmosphere linked to Musk’s leadership and political endorsements.

Amid the backlash against her proposal, Mace faced intense criticism from the left and revealed to NewsNation last month that she had received death threats. She explained that her concerns regarding access to single-sex facilities are rooted in her experience as a survivor of sexual assault and rape.
