Vice President-elect JD Vance expressed his support for President-elect Trump’s stance on Syria, where the government fell as rebels advanced into the capital city of Damascus early Sunday. Vance stated on the social platform X shortly after the rebels captured the city, “As President Trump said, this is not our fight and we should stay out of it.”
His comments aligned with Trump’s sentiments from Saturday, which came as reports surfaced about rebels moving toward Damascus after successfully taking several major cities and substantial territories previously held by the government.
“Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” Trump declared in a post on Saturday morning.
In his own post, Vance expressed concern about a statement that hailed the rebels’ victory as a triumph for freedom, noting, “Opinions like the below make me nervous.”
He cautioned, “The last time this guy was celebrating events in Syria, we saw the mass slaughter of Christians and a refugee crisis that destabilized Europe,” emphasizing that many of the rebels are affiliated with terrorist groups.
The success of the rebels signified the end of the Assad family’s 50-year reign in Syria, which has been ravaged by civil war.
