According to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Vice President-elect Vance is poised to become the Republican Party’s nominee for the 2028 presidential election. During his congressional exit interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Romney discussed the direction of the party post-Trump with host Jake Tapper.
“The Republican Party today is synonymous with MAGA, and Donald Trump embodies that,” Romney stated. He added that he believes JD Vance will be the leading candidate in 2028.
Romney highlighted Vance’s intelligence, eloquence, and commitment to the MAGA movement as key factors in his potential rise as the next GOP leader, especially since Trump selected him as his running mate last summer.
Despite having previously criticized both Trump and Vance, Romney indicated he didn’t want to revisit those remarks, noting their collaboration in the Senate since then.
In the interview, he emphasized the need for both political parties to reassess their messaging strategies, particularly regarding voters who have shifted from the left to the right in recent elections.
Earlier this month, he delivered his farewell address on the Senate floor, where he advocated for bipartisanship and encouraged lawmakers from both sides to strive for unity increasing polarization.
