Brooklyn Art Rock has become so praised lately. Acts like Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, MGMT, and Grizzly Bear have infiltrated the mainstream media in a positive manner, overall. The next crop of Brooklyn-grown art rockers destined for this sort of success is Yeasayer. Their second full-length album, titled

Odd Blood,is both bigger and bolder than 2007’s

All Hour Cymbals. In the same fashion, the new release is more sleek and produced.

Anand Wilder stated that “If a Pro Tools plug-in can achieve the same kind of sound as an analog effect, then we’ll use it …” which explains the sound of the new album. The first track titled “The Children” is no indication for what’s to come. Eerie tones and distorted vocals introduce all that is creepy and mysterious. “Ambling Alp”, the album’s first single, is most reminiscent of Animal Collective. The only choice given is to groove along with it – whether you like it or not! My favorite song happens to be “Love Me Girl.” It brings in an eastern, jungle-like sound to the forefront – a nice touch.

Similar sounds fade in and out of the record but their style seems more relevant on the debut. Going onward, it’s the feel of fun that sucks me in and makes my body move. With that said, it lacks a groundbreaking or genre-bending power. Will the listeners stay around? Only time will tell what direction Yeasayer will turn. If you ask me, I’ll simply state that Odd Blood is not so odd.
